‘OEROEG – GOING HOME’ is the story of a sworn friendship between two boys of different racial and social backgrounds which is cruelly thwarted by the courses of history. They are both born in Indonesia on the same day, one to a Dutch owner of a plantation, the other to the mandur (Indonesian mandur) of this plantation. The boys become sworn comrades. But as the days of their childhood recede into the past and the colony comes under the influence of the wave of nationalist fervour, the two young men, Johan ten Berghe and Oeroeg, find themselves on opposite sides. They are both soldiers, but they do not wear the same uniform.

The film is set in 2 periods: the 1930’s, and the period from 1945 to 1949, the years in which Dutch colonial rule over Indonesia was to end.

The script of ‘Oeroeg – Going home’ is based on the novel ‘Oeroeg’ by Hella Haasse, one of the most well known female writers in the Netherlands. She was born in Indonesia in 1918 and spent most of her youth there.
